What Makes a Strong Password?

In an effort to improve the security of student accounts, SVVSD will be asking students in grades 6 - 12 to set their own passwords rather than using a default password as they have in the past. Erie High School will begin encouraging students to setup their new passwords immediately.  These new passwords need to meet SVVSD’s standard for strength as follows:

Your password must be at least eight characters long, contain no part of your name, and include characters from following categories:

  • Uppercase letter
  • Lowercase letter
  • Number or Special character (~!@#$%^&*_-+=`|\(){}[]:;”‘<>,.?/)

These passwords will need to be changed every 365 days.

In order to help students retrieve a lost or forgotten passwords, they will be required to record answers to three security questions.  If they need to reset their password they may provide correct responses to the three questions and reset the password themselves.

If issues persist with their password they may consult with Mr Stecina who is Erie High’s Student Password Guardian.

Erie High School will provide students opportunities to setup their passwords at school as well, with the help of trained assistants.

Students who don’t setup a password by November 1st, 2017 will find themselves unable to access their school resources including their email, files and access to the school’s network.
