Principal’s update for September 9th, 2022

Dear Erie High School Families,

I hope that you and your family enjoyed the Labor Day weekend, and I thank you for your sustained support through another successful week at Erie High School.  A quick walk around our school on any day invites the opportunity to see our students thriving as students, athletes, artists, performers, and citizens.  It has been incredible for me to continue to see our hard-working, dedicated students, faculty, and staff at work each day.

This week, we reviewed school-level data with our faculty.  It was a great opportunity for us to celebrate the many great achievements of Erie High School students last year and to identify potential areas for growth as we look ahead in the 2022-2023 school year.

I am proud of the hard work and dedication from our students and teachers that led to these great achievements, and I appreciate the sustained, strong support of our Erie High School families.  We have many great achievements to celebrate!

Among the many positive achievements by our students, I highlight the following for celebration:

  • The average PSAT 9, PSAT 10, and SAT 11 scores continue to exceed the local and state averages, and in the majority of our AP courses, our average scores exceeded the state and global averages.
  • We observed consistent and strong growth across grade level cohorts in the PSAT / SAT testing – student average scores organized by graduating class grew considerably each year.
  • In the past five years, our students have increased their participation in AP coursework, highlighted by an increase from 436 students in AP courses in 2018 to 549 students in 2022, and an increase in tests administered from 745 in 2018 to 904 in 2022.
  • In the past five years, our students have improved AP test scores, highlighted by an increase in AP pass rate from 60% in 2018 to 68% in 2022.

Our focus at Erie High School is to create an environment where all students can thrive.  Upon the presentation of this school-level data, we have begun collaborative work with our faculty & staff to determine clear, measurable, and attainable goals for the 2022-2023 school year – all with a focus on supporting our students’ ability to thrive in academics, visual & performing arts, athletics, and citizenship.  In the upcoming weeks, I look forward to gathering additional feedback to ensure that we are all working together to support our students as they prepare for happy, full, and successful lives during their time at Erie High School.

Thank you for your support of your child(ren) and our school.  I am fortunate to serve as the principal of this great school and I look forward to our continued collaboration towards supporting the sustained well-being and success of our students.

Sincerely,

Josh Griffin
