About the presenter, Manette Ansay: “I’m an emerita professor (Department of English, University of Miami) and a New York Times bestselling author with eight published books including Vinegar Hill, an Oprah Winfrey Book Club Selection, and Midnight Champagne, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. My academic experience includes graduate and undergraduate teaching, advising, and intensive one-on-one mentorship. I have worked on graduate admissions committees (15 years at UM) and undergraduate program admissions committees (5 years at Vanderbilt University).  From 2017-2021, I mentored a FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics Team, a 10 hour/week commitment which included connecting team members with leadership roles throughout the community, assisting them with organizing summer STEM enrichments, and coaching junior and seniors through the college application and essay writing process. This experience deeply affected me–I found it energizing and rewarding–and since retiring from full time teaching, I’ve continued helping high school students create original essays and build effective applications.  I have also continue volunteering with FIRST, and I’m attaching their required background check along with my CV.”
